With summer “officially” over (they’re calling for temps in the 90s next week) I figured it’s time to write up my final review of a summer seasonal. Even though I got sick of this beer after we ordered a keg of it, it was still one of the best summer seasonals I discovered this year.
CITRA BLONDE SUMMER BREW is an American Blonde Ale from Oregon’s Widmer Bros. Brewing. This summer seasonal has a perfect for a hot day 4.3% ABV.
Summer is usually a wasteland for me when it comes to new beers. I’m not the world’s biggest Hefeweizen/Wheat Ale fan (there are some good ones out there) and I can only drink so many Blonde Ales before I get bored, so summer time leads me to scrounge the store shelves for something to satiate my thirst for new beer. Thankfully I found a summer beer from one of my favorite breweries that I had some how overlooked up to this point.
TWILIGHT SUMMER ALE is an American Blonde Ale with a meek 35 IBUs and an easy drinking 5% ABV.
Normally Lagunitas brews their Strong ale Brown Shugga’ for the holiday season, but this year that wasn’t a possibility. Instead of just letting the holidays slip by without being celebrated via beer, they decided to brew a slightly, but still quite good APA/XPA/DIPA .
LAGUNITAS SUCKS HOLIDAY ALE is a one-off winter seasonal with 63% IBUs and a 7.85% ABV.
10° BELOW was my first taste from Washington’s Scuttlebutt Brewing Company. This winter seasonal is brewed in the Weizenbock style (or as they call it “Imperial Dunkelweiss”), which I found to be rather interesting and original.
10° Below has 22 IBUs and a surprisingly 7.4% ABV.
Ever since I went to the Bootlegger’s 3rd Anniversary this past April I’ve become a big fan of their work. Every time I see one of their new beers on the shelf/on tap at a bar I have to give it a try. Their autumn seasonal, PUMPKIN ALE, was no exception.
Pumpkin Ale is a pumpkin ale (duh) with 17.8 IBUs and a 6.1% ABV. Continue reading
Uinta Brewing Company just started showing up in my area last summer. There labels are always simple, but noticeable, with their overall aesthetic going for consistency and not flashiness. Their autumn seasonal, PUNK’N, is part of their organic line.
This “Harvest Pumpkin ale” has a 4% ABV, 11 IBUs and is available August-October.
There’s something fancy about a bottle with a foil-wrapped cap. It’s similar to those with the traditional cage & cork, they just give off a more sophisticated vibe (even if the beer doesn’t live up to it). SMASHED PUMPKIN is one of those beers.
Part of Shipyard’s “Pugsley’s Signature Series”, Smashed Pumpkin is an autumn seasonal comes a 9% ABV. Continue reading
SUMMER BEERS Day 7
As the weather is starting to cool down outside, my summer seasonal week is also coming to an end. For this last day I decided to go with the beer that I had the most this year: SOMERSAULT from New Belgium Brewing Company. Somersault is a blonde ale with a 5.2% ABV, 28 IBUs and 130 calories.
SUMMER BEERS Day 6
Another trip to the Midwest, another Southern Tier beer review. I was back recently for a wedding and noticed a bottle of ÜBERSUN in a beer store and knew I had to buy it. I couldn’t find any info about this beer on the Southern Tier website, thankfully I took a picture of the bottle. ÜberSun is an (Imperial) Wheat Beer with an 8% ABV.
SUMMER BEERS Day 5
Day 5 may brings us another blonde ale, but it’s my first beer from Utah’s Uinta Brewing Company. Sum’r is not only a summer seasonal (available March through September), but it’s also part of their Four + series. This organic ale has a tiny 17 IBUs and a mild 4% ABV.
