I’m going to use this time to “complain” about something that I really shouldn’t “complain” about at all: the use of odd ingredients in beer. Don’t get me wrong, this is something that I love as a beer consumer. As a beer reviewer it’s a whole different story. More often that not when a brewery has made a beer using some unique ingredient like lychee, yarrow, or some other fruit/plant I’ve never heard of it both excites me and annoys me. I love weird ingredients creating a unique take on a beer style that I’ve tried 100x before, but when it comes to reviews I hate not knowing what I’m looking for or how to detect said flavor/aroma. There’s been numerous times where I’ve found myself saying something along the lines of “I don’t know what this weird smell/taste is, so it must be that odd ingredient I’ve never tried before”. This is frustrating, especially for someone like myself who is always trying new beers. Now I do realize that my “annoyance” should be with my unrefined palate and not with the brewers/beer, but self-reflection is not my strong suit, that is what the blog is for. Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah, a new beer review. A beer using a fruit that I’ve never had because I’m a plebeian. Check it out.

Here is another beer that I drank earlier this summer during a short respite from the craziness of my day job. A Saison on a warm summer day, what more could you want?
My love for all things Lips of Faith is well documented around these parts. As is my (bad) habit for sitting on beers. This review gives you the best of both worlds!
COCOA MOLÉ is a chili beer in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith series. It clocks in at a hearty 9% ABV (prior to aging). Continue reading
A while back I reviewed the Lips of Faith beer GRAND CRU and was impressed with it. Now the time has come to talk about what I assume is it’s (more super) older brother.
I’ve went on and one about my love for New Belgium and their Lips of Faith series, so I’ll refrain from beating that horse again. What I will talk about his the folks over at Alpine Beer Company. For the past couple years their IPAs have been garnering quite a bit of attention from the craft beer world. However, with all that hoopla surrounding them I had never tried one of their beers. Until now.
SUPER INDIA PALE ALE is a collaborative effort from Colorado’s New Belgium Brewery and California’s Alpine Beer Company. This Imperial IPA has a hefty 9% ABV.
I’ve stated before my love for the Lips of Faith series, so I’m just gonna jump straight into this review.
GRAND CRU ABBEY ALE is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale with a 9.5% ABV.
Ah, yes, another Lips of Faith beer. These are wondrous times.
PRICKLY PASSION SAISON is a Saison/Farmhouse Ale with an 8.5% ABV.
LIPS OF FAITH WEEK: DAY #5
Two of my favorite things in craft beer are sour ales and hoppy brews, so when I saw this “dry-hopped sour ale” I was on cloud nine! I always get excited about new Lips of Faith beers, but this one really had me pumped. Enough rambling, onto the review.
LE TERROIR is an American Wild Ale with a 7.5% ABV.
LIPS OF FAITH WEEK: DAY #4
I’ll admit that I am not a fan of the band Clutch. I am, however, a fan of beer. When I heard that New Belgium was brewing a collaboration beer with the doom/prog-rock band I admit that I was intrigued to see what they would come up with. I was (pleasantly) surprised to see that it was a sour ale. What I wasn’t surprised by was the fact that it was out there, but in a good way. CLUTCH is an American Wild Ale brewed using a blend of stout and sour. This mixed up ale has a heavy 9% ABV. Continue reading
LIPS OF FAITH WEEK: DAY #3
Dunkelweizens are really starting to grow on me. They are light and sweet, but also dark and malty. The combination makes them an “any time” beer, a.k.a. a beer that will hit the spot no matter what kinda mood you’re in. Add that in with the fact that this particular Dunkelweizen is part of the consistently tasty “Lips of Faith” series from New Belgium Brewing and I think we may just have a winner on our hands.
DUNKEL WEISS is a one-off release from New Belgium Brewing. This Dunkelweizen style ale with 9% ABV.
