I’ve had an affinity for Double IPAs for a while now, but it wasn’t until last year that I tried my first wood/oak aged DIPA. I was instantly hooked! Now add that to the fact that Great Divide makes some pretty good beers and have a great visual brand and I knew I had to purchase their 17th ANNIVERSARY WOOD AGED DOUBLE IPA.
17th Anniversary is a Double/Imperial IPA with a hearty 10% ABV.
I had been wanting to try some of the many colorful ales from Three Floyds for quite awhile now, but being on the West Coast they aren’t readily available out here. The last time I went back to the Midwest I stopped into an Indiana liquor store and found several different bottles of Three Floyds’ brew on the shelves. The bad ass wolf on the label grabbed my attention and the fact that it was an Imperial IPA sealed the deal, I must buy this beer. I’m quite glad I did.
ARCTIC PANZER WOLF is Double/Imperial IPA with 100 IBUs and a hearty 9.5% ABV. This beer is available year-round.
This past Friday marked the release of Kern River Brewing Company’s CITRA DOUBLE IPA. In honor of that glorious event, my roommates and I jumped in the car and made the 2 1/2 hour trek into central California. We arrived around 3:30 in the afternoon and were glad to see that the bar/restaurant was relatively empty. Soon we were seated and I had my first glass of Citra ordered. Sadly, I was unable to purchase any bottles to take home since they had sold out at 11:30. Boo. So, I ordered a second glass and made sure to take notes there at the bar, instead of at home (like I had originally planned).
Citrus DIPA is a limited release Double IPA with an 8% ABV.
SUMMER BEERS Day 6
Another trip to the Midwest, another Southern Tier beer review. I was back recently for a wedding and noticed a bottle of ÜBERSUN in a beer store and knew I had to buy it. I couldn’t find any info about this beer on the Southern Tier website, thankfully I took a picture of the bottle. ÜberSun is an (Imperial) Wheat Beer with an 8% ABV.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY Beer #4: JOLLY RODGER 2010
Drake’s Brewing’s Jolly Rodger 2010 is another beer that I received for Christmas. This Imperial Red Ale was their winter seasonal and clocked in at 8.0% ABV with 68 IBUs.
Day 3 brings us a beer that I happened to try by chance. My roommates went on a trip to Santa Barbara and on the way back they stopped at the Hollister Brewing Company. There they picked up today’s THEME WEEK selection: SHAKY HANDS.
Shaky Hands is an American porter brewed with coffee and clocks in at 7.5% ABV.
Day 2 of October’s THEME WEEK brings us a beer that is new to California: ESPRESSO OAK AGED YETI from Great Divide Brewing.
Espresso Oak Aged Yeti is a variation of the classic Yeti. This imperial stout is only available between February-March and clocks in at 9.5% ABV.
