I originally heard about this particular beer via Reddit, and to a lesser extent Beer Advocate. People online were praising this beer and chastising the brewers for calling what they had deemed a Session IPA an American Wheat Ale. In their eyes this appeared to be hophead suicide. With all of this back and forth going on in the forums I knew I had to try it so that I could throw my 2 cents into the conversation. Who was right? Read on to find out…
FORTUNATE ISLANDS is an American Pale Wheat Ale with a sippable 4.8% ABV and a seemingly contradictory 46 IBUs. Continue reading
I’m not normally the biggest fan of wheat/witbiers/hefeweizens, but the word on the interwebz was this was a good beer. And when has the internet been wrong? Not this time.
GUMBALLHEAD is an American pale wheat ale with a 5.6% ABV and 35 IBUs.
If there’s one thing Dogfish Head is known for it’s making unique limited release beers. President and founder Sam Calagione is always on a quest for new ingredients to add to his ever-expanding line of off-centered ales. Although RED & WHITE isn’t as “out there” as some of the stuff they produce, it is definitely not your typical beer.
Red & White is a Belgian-style Witbier with a practically non-existent 35 IBUs and an ABV that floats between beer and wine at 10%.
BEER #3: OLD CHICO BRAND CRYSTAL WHEAT
Whenever I go to something like this I try to try the beers that I’ve never had before. Old Chico Brand Crystal Wheat was one of those beers. This American Pale Wheat beer is available year round and has a very sessionable 4.3% ABV.
After having tried the Reserve Wheat, I figured I might as well try it’s “plain jane” cousin Golden Wheat Ale. Just like RWA, Golden Wheat Ale has a 5.0% ABV.
SUMMER BEERS Day 6
Another trip to the Midwest, another Southern Tier beer review. I was back recently for a wedding and noticed a bottle of ÜBERSUN in a beer store and knew I had to buy it. I couldn’t find any info about this beer on the Southern Tier website, thankfully I took a picture of the bottle. ÜberSun is an (Imperial) Wheat Beer with an 8% ABV.
Oarsman Ale is a sour mash wheat ale from Kalamazoo’s Bell’s Brewery. This beer is available year-round and has an easy drinking 4% ABV.
