The acquisition of a “rare” beer is a special treat. But like Uncle Ben once said, “with great power comes great responsibility”. What the hell am I talking about, you might ask. Well, I’m talking about the decision of when to crack open that hard-to-find gem you’ve just spent (usually) a good amount of money on. Do you drink it right when it’s fresh? Or do you set on it for a little bit and save it for a special occasion? Usually I tend to fall into the latter category of beer drinkers. So when we decided to get together for drinks at our house for a close friend’s birthday I saw the perfect opportunity to share one of these special beers.
BLACK TUESDAY is a barrel-aged Imperial Stout from The Bruery. This particular bottle is from 2012 and has a whopping 19.5% ABV. Continue reading
Clown Shoes, out of Ipswich, Massachusetts, has a reputation that precedes them. Some of this is because of the quality of the beer, some of it is due to the “conversations” that erupted on Beer Advocate due to their beer names. Either way, I was glad their beer was finally available on the West Coast so that I can judge it for myself.
CHOCOLATE SOMBRERO is an Imperial Stout with a 9% ABV.
With the men’s NCAA Championship on the TV I figured it would be a perfect time to bring out a bottle that I’ve been sitting on a while. A beer that was brewed in Michigan that had the name Kentucky in the title felt very fitting for a night where the University of Michigan battled the University of Louisville. It also didn’t hurt that said beer was considered one of the best in the word.

BEER GEEK BRUNCH WEASEL is an Imperial Stout from Denmark’s Mikkeller Brewery. Part of their “Beer Geek” series, Weasel uses Kopi Luwak coffee beans (widely regarded as the best and most expensive coffee in the world) to add an extra dimension to this beer.
Beer Geek Brunch Weasel clocks in with a beefy 10.9% ABV.
Tokio, or Tokyo as they refer to it on the BrewDog website, is an American Double/Imperial Stout. This was also the beer that put the brewers in the “bigger is better” mindset. This cranberry and jasmine infused ales has a whopping 18.2% ABV! That is almost double that of your traditional imperial stout. Needless to say when I saw a bottle of this sitting on the shelf at my local liquor store I had to pick it up. This past Friday we were having a little beer tasting at our place and I felt it was the perfect time to crack this beer open. Without further ado…
Rauch Geek Breakfast is the American name for the Mikkeller beer Beer Geek Bacon. When it came time to import the beer into the United States, the FDA informed them that a name change was in order since the beer did not actually contain any bacon. They changed the name from Beer Geek Bacon to Rauch Geek Breakfast (keeping in line with their other “Geek” and “Breakfast” beers and adding the German word for smoke). Whatever you want to call it, this Double/Imperial Stout clocks in at 7.5% ABV.
Day 2 of October’s THEME WEEK brings us a beer that is new to California: ESPRESSO OAK AGED YETI from Great Divide Brewing.
Espresso Oak Aged Yeti is a variation of the classic Yeti. This imperial stout is only available between February-March and clocks in at 9.5% ABV.
