Class of ’88 Barleywine Style Ale (North Coast/Rogue/Deschutes)

I love the idea behind these “Class of ’88” beers. A bunch of breweries who were all founded in 1988 have gotten together to created a commemorative recipe. They then go to their respective brewery and brew said recipe. The result being the beer I’m here to review.

Class of 88 Barleywine labelCLASS OF ’88 BARLEYWINE STYLE ALE is a collaboration between North Coast, Rogue, and Deschutes. This particular version was brewed at North Coast and has an even 10% ABV.

Old Cunundrum aged in Brandy Barrels (FiftyFifty Brewing)

I decided to save the biggest FiftyFifty beer for last, probably not the best idea, but whatever. When I ordered the Barleywine I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they also had a brandy barrel aged version on tap, and as we all know you always go with the barrel aged version.

Tumbledown Shack (Golden Road Brewing)

I love me a good Barleywine. The problem is that they’re not all that readily available. Sure, a handful of breweries have one in their rotation, but few make them well. Will this one make the cut?

Bigfoot Barleywine 2012 (Sierra Nevada Brewing Company)

Every year spring time means two things: spring seasonals and Barleywines. One of those Barleywines that always gets the attention of beer aficianados is BIGFOOT BARLEYWINE from Chino, California’s Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Oddly enough this was the first time I had sampled Bigfoot in the several years that I have been a craft beer fan.

Bigfoot is an American Barleywine with 90 IBUs and a hefty 9.6% ABV.

Kentucky Blue (Ladyface Alehouse & Brasserie)

A few weeks back I ventured over to Paramount Ranch for the Topanga Canyon Banjo & Fiddle Contest. The sun was shining, the music was pumping, and the beer was flowing. After several hours of country, bluegrass, roots, western, and traditional music I felt the perfect way to end the day was to swing by Ladyface Alehouse & Brasserie for some dinner and drinks. There cask beer was a barrel-aged version of their Barleywine that I knew I must have.

KENTUCKY BLUE is an American Barleywine with a 10.5% ABV.
