Back in September/October I took a trip up to the bay area. After leaving Sierra Nevada one evening I stopped at a local liquor store to grab some beers for the hotel room. Since I was in a new market I figured I’d grab something we don’t have access to down here in SoCal. Several weeks later I finally reviewed one of those beers. And a couple of months after that I wrote this review.
BREW FREE! OR DIE IPA is brewed with some serious west coast attitude. This aromatic golden IPA starts with a sucker punch of six different hops to the nose, quickly balanced by a solid malt backbone. Our top selling beer at the pub, this IPA starts big and finishes clean leaving you wanting more.
Brew Free! poured a delectable orangish gold that I love seeing from an IPA. Two inches of heavy white foam float atop the glass as streams of bubbles race up the side.
The nose was an amalgam of biscuit, pine, grass, and straw. As it opened it released a pineapple and mango aroma that was very tropical/fruity.
Tropical fruit flavors start of the taste of this beer, but were not as specifically definable as they were in the nose. Grass and biscuit malt flavors appear in the middle, before finishing with a honey/cracker sweetness. This balancing act was well done, but left a little to be desired when compared to the aroma.
Mouthfeel is light to medium. There’s a stickiness from stem to stern that leaves a residue behind after each sip.
Even though I was impressed with this beer, I still feel the taste didn’t live up to the loveliness of the nose. The tropical flavors were more pronounced and had wonderful accents of pine and grass that were lacking in the taste. However Brew Free! or Die is still a legit IPA and one that any brewery would be proud to have as their flagship beer.
