Lemon Berry Shandy (Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co.)

I rolled into an Albertson’s one day after an afternoon full of salty foods and hoppy Double IPAs. I wanted more beer, but I needed something lighter as a change of pace. I found it in the form of a six-pack from the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company.

Leinenkugel Lemon Berry ShandyLEMON BERRY SHANDY is either a Shandy or a Fruit Beer, depending on where you look. Either way, it’s available year-round and comes with an easy-drinking 4.2% ABV.

Lemon Berry ShandyLight, crisp and perfect for every season. Our Leinenkugel’s Lemon Berry Shandy is Weiss beer brewed with blackberry juice and natural lemonade flavor. And the best part is this Shandy is available year round. So now every season is Shandy season.

With all the berries on the label I was surprised that this beer poured a cloudy apricot color. The head starts off fairly large, but collapses into a bubbly foam. Some variation of this foamy head remains for the entirety of the drinking process. There are TONS of carbonation in this beer.

The smell decides to start off by skipping the “Lemon” and “Berry” parts of the name and goes straight for the “Shandy”. Lemonade starts things off, but is rather muted. Grape, blackberry, Italian lemon soda, and cran-grape juice were all noticeable as well. I even picked up notes of peach. The aroma is very fruity, but it all seems fake.

A “smorgasbord of fruit flavors” is how I described the taste in my original notes. Raspberry, blackberry, lemon, grapefruit, and white grape were all there. This beer actually tastes as much like a soda as it does a beer. If it wasn’t for the carbonation this could probably pass for a wine cooler. Sadly, the more sips you take the more acclimated you become to the tastes and the fruit flavors become very artificial.

Mouthfeel is very light and very bubbly. It fades rather quickly and leaves a sugary stickiness behind (any one who has had a sugary soda can attest to this feeling).

I could see many a layperson saying “this is beer?” after trying one of these. It’s very fruity and easy to drink, but after a while the fakeness of it kills the drinking experience. I probably won’t revisit this beer, but there are definitely way worse options for drinking on a warm sunny day.

Overall: 5.5 out of 10

As a FRUIT BEER: 6 out of 10
