BEER #3: OLD CHICO BRAND CRYSTAL WHEAT
Whenever I go to something like this I try to try the beers that I’ve never had before. Old Chico Brand Crystal Wheat was one of those beers. This American Pale Wheat beer is available year round and has a very sessionable 4.3% ABV.
Brewed using 65% wheat malt and 35% barley malt. This filtered wheat beer is light blonde in color, light-bodied and has a wonderfully clean finish. This is a great choice for craft brew novices and beer aficionados alike.
Old Chico poured a golden yellow with tiny bubbles rising here and there. The head faded before I even had time to criticize it.
This was an odd nose, but not at first. The initial scent is wheat, but then some wild flowers start cropping up in this wheat field. Next thing you know we have bees making honey in the wild flowers. And finally the bees eat some saltine crackers to celebrate a hard day’s work. (I know that last analogy doesn’t fit, but how else would I put “cracker like malts” into the picture I’d just painted?)
I was excited to try this beer, because the nose was slightly bigger and slightly more flavorful than your average wheat beer. Sadly, this beer tastes way more like a lager than I was prepared for. Wheat starts off the flavor with the middle reminding me of cereal grains. The end has a hint of honey with a bit of hard water mineralyness (totally a word).
As one would expect from a wheat beer the mouthfeel is light, but not all that smooth. It goes down easy enough, but it leaves something to remember it by.
I must admit I was disappointed by this beer. I had to try it because I had never seen it before, but I wish I would have saved that drink ticket for something else. The flavors were meh and it wasn’t all that easy-drinking. Not your best, Sierra Nevada.
