Pitch Black IPA takes you to the dark side with our take on Cascadian Dark Ale. Debittered black malt lends a midnight hue along with rich, toasty malt flavor. Generous doses of alchemy and Cascade hops provide a complex herbal aroma and subtle citrus notes, balanced perfectly by a smooth Widmer Brothers finish. Embrace the dark side.
Pitch Black pours a deep brown/black with delectable garnet hues. There was practically no head or hint of one. Lacing is light with a just a few splashes of foam left behind.
The smell is of pine hops, grain and faint smoke. I also picked up hints of dark chocolate.
Dark malts dominate the flavor of this beer; so much so, that I originally thought of an ESB. However, a hint of bitter hops comes through in the middle before fading to a cracker-like lightness. There’s a sweetness, similar to honey, that dances around inside each sip of this dark beer.
Mouthfeel is light-to-medium, but dries at the end.
Pitch Black IPA is a tasty beer, but then again it’s made by Widmer Brothers, so I wouldn’t expect any less. Although it’s not quite as hoppy as I hoped, I was still relatively happy with the drinking experience.
