Requiem Espresso Stout (Gentleman Scholar Brewing Co.)

Here’s a left over review from October’s Coffee Beer THEME WEEK: REQUIEM ESPRESSO STOUT.

Requiem Espresso Stout is the first beer from Los Angeles’s Gentleman Scholar Brewing Company.  This American stout clocks in at 7% ABV.

R.E.S. pours a dark chocolate brown with a fizzy 1/2 inch of cola. The head quickly dissipates into a thin film.

I was taken aback by the smells coming from this beer.  I picked up peanuts, chocolate-covered cherries, apples and oranges.  No espresso/coffee scents to be found.  Interesting…

The taste really through me for a loop.  If I didn’t know better I would not have guessed that this was a stout, yet alone an espresso stout.  It essentially tastes like a caramel apple dipped in chocolate.  It’s fruity, sweet and tasty!  As the beer warms roastiness and a mild cinnamon come through.  Still no coffee…

Mouthfeel is surprisingly light for a beer this style, with no drying or stickiness.

Requiem Espresso Stout is a good beer, but I wouldn’t have guessed that it was an espresso/coffee beer.  (I would have guessed more of a Doppelbock or a Scotch Ale).  It’s a unique drinking experience, especially for a brewery’s first go.  I just might have to pick up a bottle for cellaring.
