Helles Lager (Saranac Brewery)

Day 3 of July’s SARANAC BREWERY THEME WEEK has finally arrived!

Helles is Saranac’s version of a German Munich Helles lager.  This malty brew clocks in at 4.8% ABV.

Brewed in the Bavarian tradition.  Our Helles is decoction mashed with select German malts to produce a malty brew.  Our selection of German Noble Hops and our authentic Bavarian Yeast combine to balance the maltiness and end in a dry refreshing beer.

Helles pours a see through straw color.  There are thousands of tiny bubbles floating up to the big, bubbly head.  But the head quickly subsides into a thin film.

When smelling this beer the pale German malts dominate the aroma.  I also detected lemon, honey and goldenrod notes.

The taste is honey-like, with minor cream soda notes also hiding in the liquid.  There are slight lemon flavors in the back-end.  As the beer warms, the pale malts take over the flavor, mellowing out into a creamy malty liquid.

Mouthfeel is creamy, with a light-to-medium body.  Very mild stickiness clings to the inside of your mouth.

Helles lager is another okay, but not overly impressive beer from Saranac.  It’s a decent session beer and one that I could picture myself drinking while floating in a raft down the river.

Overall: 5.5 out of 10

As a MUNICH HELLES: 6.5 out of 10
