I know, I know, I’m a little behind on my reviews. This beer is from last autumn and I’m just now getting to it. Night Owl is the autumn seasonal from Elysian Brewing Company. It has a meager 20 IBUs and 6.0% ABV.
Our original pumpkin ale is brewed with over 7 lbs. of pumpkin per barrel and spiced in conditioning with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, ginger and allspice.
Night Owl pours a delectable deep copper with orange highlights. The head is a half-inch of cream that melds into a thin foam with mild lacing.
This beer smells just like Thanksgiving! I picked up hints of ginger(bread), nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and peppermint candy.
Night Owl tastes like a gingerbread pumpkin pie. Spicy and flavorful! Baker’s chocolate appears as the flavor of the beer mellows out.
Mouthfeel is surprisingly thin, but creamy (this might be due to the age of the beer). There’s a definite spiciness that reminds of an alcoholic heat, but without the burn. Goes down smooth.
Night Owl falls somewhere between Jack’s Pumpkin Ale and Punkin Ale. It’s almost as flavorful as Punkin, but not as strong/overpowering. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to try a fresher bottle come next autumn.
Overall: 8 out of 10
As a PUMPKIN ALE: 8.5 out of 10
