E.S.Chi (Marin Brewing Co.)

E.S.Chi is an herb beer from Marin Brewing Company.  I couldn’t find anything on their website, but it appears that this beer comes in around 5.5% ABV.

E.S. Chi is made with an Extra Bitter Beer base from Marin Brewing Company and a proprietary blend of herbs, specially prepared by Master Herbalist Yen-Wei Choong, Lie. Ac. Dr. Choong is the director of Yellow Emperor Natural Healing Center and Zen Garden: Chinese Healing Herbs San Anselmo, CA.

This beer pours a copper color with amber highlights.  The half-inch head fades quickly, leaving behind very little lacing.

This was one of the most interesting beers I’ve ever smelled.  I picked up notes of bread, cinnamon, coffee and green tea.  Odd…

The oddity of this brew continues with the taste.  E.S.Chi essentially tastes like a thicker, cold green tea.  I also picked up spicy notes and hints of lemongrass.  There’s a refreshing effervescence that usually isn’t found in beer that I quite enjoyed.

Mouthfeel is light with a drying that isn’t intrusive.  The liquid clings to the inside of your mouth and makes it feel as if you’re actually drinking tea.

This is an interesting beer.  I could see this being huge with the “hippy” culture, but it’s not something I could drink every day. I would imagine that E.S.Chi would be a great way to finish off a tasty meal or while relaxing with a good book.
