Whole Hog Smoked Porter (Indian Wells Brewing Company)

Whole Hog is one of the beers brewed exclusively for Whole Foods by Indian Wells Brewing Company. This one is a porter with an easy-drinking 5% ABV.

*I couldn’t find a good picture of the beer and it’s not mentioned on the Indian Wells website, so I just went with a generic picture from their site.

The beer pours a deep black with a cola-colored head. The head dissipates quickly, leaving no film or lacing behind. Carbonation is heavy and makes the liquid look like a cola.

Whole Hog smells like nuts and smoke. My initial thought was smoked pork, which must be where the name comes from.

The taste is smokey, like a rauchbier, with a nutty quality also present. To me, it reminded me of beef jerky. Weird, I know.

The mouthfeel is very thin with a ton of carbonation (very soda like). Not very porter-y.

Whole Hog is an okay beer, but I wouldn’t consider it a porter. Rauchbier (or smoke beer) is definitely a better classification, but maybe not as marketable.

Overall: 4.5 out of 10

As a PORTER: 3.5 out of 10
