Trader Joe’s Vintage Ale 2009

Trader Joe’s Vintage Ale is a yearly beer brewed in conjunction with Unibroue.  This Belgian-style ale has a respectable 9% ABV.

Dark Ale on Lees!

Pours a dark brown almost black, with root beer like colors at the bottom.  This is a very heady beer (cola colored) and has practically no lacing.

Smells like root beer and/or cola with a slight spiciness in the back-end.

Taste is spicy and ginger ale-like.  There are also licorice like qualities and slight menthol notes.  Very interesting and surprising.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with only a slight stickiness. Don’t get much alcohol or bite in the brew.

Vintage Ale 2009 is a dark ale/dubbel that’s surprisingly good for it’s price range ($4.99 per 750ml bottle).  It’s not the best in its style, but it’s possibly the best in its style’s price range.

Overall:  7 out of 10

As a BELGIAN DUBBEL:  7 out of 10
