Ellie’s Brown Ale is an American Brown Ale from Avery Brewing, with an ABV of 5.5%. Another craft beer with the brewmaster’s dog on the label, ya gotta love that!
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery’s late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that’s second to none, just like Ellie!
Ellie’s Brown pours a super dark brown (“deep russet”), with subtle root beer coloring along the bottom and edges of the glass. The head is thick and off-white. Lacing is medium to heavy.
The nose is of chocolate with heavy burnt notes sitting in there. A slight smokiness resides in the smell, along with mild hints of coffee. They claim that it has a “nutty character” and if you stick your nose deep enough in the glass then you can definitely pick up on the smell of slow-roasted peanuts (and get foam on your face at the same time!).
Chocolate is the name of the game when it comes to flavor. The burnt/smokiness appears in the aftertaste and gives it a nice clean finish.
I was kinda surprised by the thinness of this brew. I expected a thicker liquid (more akin to an English Brown), but Ellie’s is more of a medium to light bodied beer. The beer clings to the roof of your mouth and has a slight drying sensation once the drink is gone.
Ellie’s Brown Ale is a respectable beer from a respectable brewer. The mild drying sensation leaves you craving another drink of this enjoyable chocolatey brew.
