Altbier (Karl Strauss Brewing Company)

Altbier is the other June seasonal from Karl Strauss.  This German-styled ale has a sessionable 5% ABV.

A copper colored, medium-bodied German ale with rich, toasty malt flavors up front, balanced by a distinct hop presence. Its finish is firm and nutty with a slightly lingering bitterness.

This beer is copper/ruby colored with a ½ inch white “crown”.  It soon faded to a slight layer of foam.  Very, very little lacing.

Slight chocolate in the nose.  Hints of malt.

The taste is of hot chocolate, minus the hot part.  Caramel is also present in the flavor, with slight notes of dark chocolate in the end.

Mouthfeel is smooth and delicious.

This is a fantastic beer and one of my favorite Karl Strauss brews.  Now if only they’d make this available year-round.

Overall: 8 out of 10

As an ALTBIER: 8.5 out of 10
