Every year to celebrate their anniversary, Full Sail Brewing Company releases a special limited edition brew. With 2008 being the brewery’s 21st birthday, they decided to go with a Doppelbock to celebrate the occasion. This beer clocks in at 8% ABV.
21 is a very pretty beer. It pours with a mouth-watering dark brown color with crimson highlights, when held up to the light. The head is a lovely cream color, with heavy retention and mild lacing.
The nose is mild with the smell of yeast being the most prominent. Belgian sugar is also present, but hidden in the yeast flavor.
21 is a tasty beer. This is what a doppelbock is meant to taste like. The first thing that comes to mind is the alcohol like warmth that invades your mouth. The Belgian sugars are a lot more present in the flavor then in the nose. Delicious.
In the end, I wish that this beer was a year round beer and not just a limited edition. 21 Doppelbock is one of the better doppels around. It’s obvious that the guys (and gals) at Full Sail knew what they were doing when it came to this special edition brew. The perfect addition to any 21st birthday celebration.
Overall: 8 out of 10
As a DOPPLEBOCK: 8.5 out of 10
