Drop Top Amber Ale is another gold medal beer from the fine folks at Widmer Brothers Brewing. A complex, but oh so drinkable amber ale that has quickly become a favorite of mine.
Upon opening the beer my first thought was hops. A piney nose is at the forefront of the smell. But after pouring out the beer and letting it sit for a moment, my nose starting picking up the scent of a Chinese chicken salad. I don’t know if it’s wontons or pecans, but it’s an odd yet enjoyable smell. But that’s not all. There were also hints of citrus, chocolate, sugar, and maple syrup.
The beer pours with an, you guessed it, amber color. The head is a good two fingers of eggshell-colored goodness, that leaves behind a mild level of lacing.
As for the taste. WOW. The Drop Top Amber Ale is chockfull of flavors! I shit you not when I say it reminded me of not only an amber, but also a pale ale and even a stout. The initial flavor that assaulted my tongue was that of chocolaty goodness (ala a stout). Soon after, the sugars became more apparent and so did the hops. Not too bitter though, but just right. The mouthfeel is mild with a slight alcohol warmth that makes my mouth tingle.
Overall, Widmer’s Drop Top Amber Ale is a magnificent beer. It has the trifecta: it’s complex, flavorful, and easy to drink. Widmer is quickly becoming one of my favorite (and one of the most surprising) brewers. I highly recommend picking up a six-pack of this. And at only $8, you CAN NOT beat that deal.
