PUMPKIN BEER #2
I decided to stick with a sour for my second beer of the day and was crossing my fingers that this would be better than the first. Sour Pumpkin is a seasonal beer that is usually only available at the brewery, but we were lucky enough to have it on tap at the GREAT PUMPKIN BEER FEST. And not only that, but this was the 2010 vintage of this American Wild Ale.
100% Brett fermented, barrel aged sour pumpkin ale. 6.75% ABV.
Sour Pumpkin 2010 poured a light golden straw color. When I say light, I mean light. Only a few globs of foam were found floating on the surface.
The nose is…weird. I honestly smelled like fermented honey and cheap vodka. There were also faint hints of chocolate and a tannic white wine tinge.
The taste is…odd. It starts with a sour yam flavor, with some green apple and lemon flavors. In the middle it then transitions into a cheap candy corn/artificial honey flavor. Another faint sour pang tops it off.
Mouthfeel is dry and light, with a residue that sticks to your gums as you finish.
It’s funny, this is how I imagined Mr. Yuck to taste. If it weren’t for the initial off-putting sour vegetable flavor this would be an enjoyable beer. That being said, it’s not bad, but it leaves a lot more to be desired.
Overall: 5.5 out of 10
As an AMERICAN WILD ALE: 4.5 out of 10
